What do you make when a dear friend (who was also your sidekick in your textiles class at school) sends you this amazing fabric - and lots of it too... Well its obvious isn't it, a Kimono of course!
To be honest, it wasn't something I'd have considered making for no other reason than the material alone must have cost a small fortune, and I wasn't sure if I was confident enough to try. It looked so beautiful as it was, I was worried I would completely ruin it.
All that being said I found a pattern online and gave it a go!
I've mentioned previously my sewing skills aren't necessarily the best and there are certain techniques I'm not too great with so try to find short cuts or a simplified way to gain the same outcome.
My main issue with this was trying to not let the fabric slip so much when pinning and cutting, and finding a surface area big enough was a small feat. So I used the living room carpet, which meant every so often I'd pin the pattern not only to the fabric but also the carpet. Doh!
The fabric was and still is (as I have plenty left) a dream to work with, and washes just as well. I now have this lovely Kimono which I'll be using as soon as the weather picks back up again and may even make a matching little bag to go with it.
All in all though, it wasn't that bad. The only issue I really had was when finishing the band around the edge. I decided to hand sew this on the inside to give an invisible finish, but as I've discovered my machine sewing far out ways my hand sewing any day!
